Directions

Karlsruhe is easy and quick to travel to. The city stands at the hub of a variety of modern transport links – coming in from all points of the compass. Drivers can reach us quickly on the motorway (Autobahn A5, A6, A85) which goes right around the city. Or fly into Germany’s biggest international airport: Frankfurt. Intercity express trains (ICE) run directly from Frankfurt airport to Karlsruhe. It takes exactly one hour.

Reaching Karlsruhe by air

Karlsruhe can be easily reached from four airports: the local airport - Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden – is no more than a 30 minute drive away, while Frankfurt, Strasbourg and Stuttgart airports are about 60 minutes by car.

• Frankfurt International Airport
  If you arrive in Frankfurt, the easiest way to Karlsruhe is by train. Frankfurt Airport has an ICE high speed train station directly attached to it. Follow the signs "long distance trains"/"Fernbahnhof" in Frankfurt. Trains roughly operate every hour from Frankfurt Airport to Karlsruhe and the trip itself also takes about one hour. • Stuttgart International Airport
  If you arrive in Stuttgart, the easiest way to Karlsruhe is by train. You can take the airport metro (S-Bahn) to Stuttgart main station where you have to change to the train to Karlsruhe. Overall time to travel to Karlsruhe is going to be between one and two hours (depending on the train type and connections). For traveling with the train from "STR Stuttgart Airport" (airport station) please look at Reaching Karlsruhe by train.
• Karlsruhe-Baden (only served by low-cost carriers)
  If you arrive at Karlsruhe-Baden, there is a shuttle-bus going non-stop to Karlsruhe main station. It takes about half an hour drive to Karlsruhe. The schedule can be found at the operator's site http://www.hahn-express.de.
• Other airports
  There are other airports located around 2 hours or less away from Karlsruhe (you'll need to find out how to get to the Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof main station by digging into the web pages linked):
  
  • Airport Strasbourg (around 1 hour by car; public transportation available but requires many changes)
  • EuroAirport Basel (around 2 hours by car; coach to/from Freiburg and city bus to/from Basel SBB available)
  • Frankfurt Hahn (around 2 hours by car; public transportation connections to different cities are avaiable). Please note that Franfurt Hahn is neither identical nor near Frankfurt (International) Airport!

Reaching Karlsruhe by train

Karlsruhe is a hub for ICE, InterCity, EuroCity and regional trains, and is located directly on the Hamburg-Frankfurt-Basel intercity line. The east-west line Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Munich begins here, too. And the high-speed TGV train takes you from Paris to Karlsruhe in just three hours.

The main operator is German Railways (Deutsche Bahn AG) which provides a multilingual online service at http://www.bahn.com/ for planning and/or booking your journey. It is advised to choose the main station (Karlsruhe Hbf) as destination. Train tickets can also be purchased at counters or multilingual vending machines within the stations. Credit and debit cards are accepted.
After arriving at Karlsruhe main station you can catch a taxi or the excellent local transportation to get to your hotel or the conference. Both are available outside the main station. Follow the "exit city / Ausgang City" signs. Local transportation is operated by the Karlsruher Verkehrs Verbund (KVV). You will find ticket vending machines for the KVV in the main station's hall. For a single ticket, press "Einzelfahrkarte" (topmost left button), afterwards press 002 to select Karlsruhe. The ticket costs approx. 2 Euros (opposed to taxi trips which most likely will cost 8 to 15 Euros).

Reaching Karlsruhe by car

Karlsruhe is connected to several freeways (the "Autobahn"). You can travel to Karlruhe via:

• A5 from the North (Hamburg, Frankfurt, Mannheim/Heidelberg)
• A5 from the South (Basel, Freiburg, Straßburg)
• A8 from the East (München/Munich, Ulm, Stuttgart) via an interchange with the A5 directly to Karlsruhe
• A65 from the West (Landau, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, France) which turns into the B10 directly ahead of Karlsruhe
